University ran in to a buzz saw Friday night, dropping a 68-18 road contest to Class 4A No. 6 Lawrence Central.
Lawrence Central scored the first six points of the game before sophomore Hannah Grubbs got University on the board with a rebound basket with 5:40 left in the first quarter. The Bears, ranked fifth in the single class poll, then used their length and athleticism to score 16 consecutive points on their way to a commanding 28-5 lead after the opening quarter.
The Lawrence Central onslaught continued in the second quarter, stretching the halftime lead to 47-11, ensuring the second half would be played with a running clock.
Anyah Jordan-Turley had six points to lead University. Keira Bright and Charlotte Conyers each had four points. Jaylah Lampley had 20 points for Lawrence Central with Lola Lampley adding 16.
Lawrence Central improves to 3-0 on the season with University falling to 1-2.
University returns to action Tuesday evening for their home opener against Brebeuf Jesuit. The contest will tip at 6 p.m. and is the opening contest of a doubleheader that will see the Trailblazer boys open their season against Bethesda Christian.
