A late run gave the Fishers boys basketball team a big win on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers beat Westfield 45-40 in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game that was played at Kokomo’s Memorial Gymnasium as part of Basketball Day in Indiana. The game was televised on Fox Sports Indiana, and Fishers put on a show with a 15-2 run that sealed its victory.
The Shamrocks led 38-32 with under four minutes left, but that’s when the Tigers’ Justin Long took over. Long scored eight straight points to push Fishers ahead 40-38. Westfield’s Braden Smith tied the game back up with a basket, but the Tigers finished the game by scoring the last five points.
Fishers led 13-17 after the first quarter, but the ‘Rocks cut that lead to 24-23 by halftime. The Tigers led 32-25 during the third period before Westfield zoomed off on a 13-0 run. Smith scored seven of those points, and Benji Welch’s basket put the Shamrocks up by 38-32, before Fishers made its comeback.
Long finished the game with 20 points. Charlie Smith led the Tigers’ rebounding with eight, while Jeffrey Simmons collected six rebounds. Dominic Castellani handed out four assists.
Braden Smith scored 16 points for the ‘Rocks and also had seven rebounds. Eli Patchett pulled six rebounds.
Fishers and Westfield are both 3-3 in the conference and part of a three-way tie for third place with Zionsville. Overall, the Tigers are 14-5 and they play at Anderson on Tuesday. The Shamrocks are 10-6 and host Harrison on Tuesday.
