“Tell me a story.” Alabama Story has love wrapped around and through it, and now, for the closeout week, Actors Theatre of Indiana (ATI) is offering you to livestream this production for only $25.
Actors Theatre of Indiana invites you to share in a true story about one of Indiana’s own. This powerful play is about Indiana native Emily Wheelock Reed, who, as the Alabama state librarian in 1959, confronted racism and censorship as she defended a book called “The Rabbits’ Wedding” about a black-furred rabbit marrying a white-furred rabbit.
Don Farrell, who plays State Senator E.W. Higgins, expressed his feelings about the production saying, “In the year since we presented this production, the United States has intensely dealt with issues relating to race. Whether it is the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis or a rise in hate groups gathering online, the themes of civil rights and prejudice are prevalent in 2021. This story from 1959 feels even more relevant today. The events of the past year have opened my eyes in a new way. I spoke with my colleagues at Actors Theatre of Indiana and we knew we wanted to do something. So, the idea came to bring back our production of Alabama Story.”
The drama was originally part of the 2019-2020 season, performed at The Studio Theater, part of The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. It continues to be of great interest due to the fact that it is based on actual events and is so relative to current headlines.
If you missed this play onstage, this is the perfect opportunity to see this heartfelt and touching drama. This is the final week to share in the online performance of Alabama Story with the final streaming available Feb. 14. Please go to ATIstage.org to order tickets or call the Center for the Performing Arts box office at (317) 843-3800.
