Kevin Bishop

August 31, 1952 – January 19, 2020

Kevin Bishop, 67, Sheridan, passed away on Sunday afternoon, January 19, 2020 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Kevin grew up and lived most of his life in Sheridan where his big personality and larger-than-life sense of humor will live on through countless stories from his friends and family. He graduated from Sheridan High School in 1970 and worked at the two Bishop family-owned businesses in town. He was a flooring installer for Bishop Home Supply and was the meat manager at Sheridan Food Market. It was the latter position that earned him one of his many nicknames, “Meat Man.” He later went on to work in sales for World Carpets for many years, traveling throughout the state, each time bringing home a cassette single of whatever his daughter’s favorite song at that time happened to be.

His major organizational affiliation was the famous Rat Fink Club established in a club house on 1st Street where he and his buddies, Dana, Dudley and Nick, hung out from age six to early teens, sneaking cigarettes and making the most of their childhood friendship. He loved telling stories of these times, as well as his stint as a racehorse owner and playing in a band with his friends. He continued to play guitar, even until recently in his condo in the Spicewood retirement community. Hopefully his neighbors enjoyed rock and roll!

He said many times the best years of his life were spent raising his children. He enjoyed coaching them and their friends in basketball, baseball and softball. Later in life he cheered on from the sidelines of his grandchildren’s games, always positive and often keeping his own children in check! He was the grandpa who got down on the floor and played for hours with them – whether it be with dolls or dinosaurs. He was also grandpa to his beloved grandpet, Sofie, a five-pound poodle who was eager and overjoyed to spend the occasional week at the “Pappy Spa.”

He is survived by the loves of his life, his three children, Ryan Elliot (Valerie) Bishop, Noblesville, Brock Austin (Kelly) Bishop, Noblesville, and Megan Alane (Clay) Lingerfeldt, Whitestown; his 11 grandchildren, Marisa Bishop, Logan (Bishop) Osborne, Sydney Bishop, Isabelle Bishop, Noah Robinson, Elijah Hood, Paul Henry Bishop, Alec Turner, Holland Coyle, Calvin Lingerfeldt and Cade Lingerfeldt; and by his two great-grandchildren, Landon Singleton and Karter Bishop. He also leaves behind his brother, Craig (Dorothy) Bishop; and sister, Judy Kercheval, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Ovid Henry Bishop and Lona Ann (Brown) Bishop; and his sister- and brother-in-law, whom he also loved and often spoke of, Jayne Ann (Bishop) Bless and Ed Bless.

Kevin did not know a stranger, and he could easily talk to anyone for hours, with stories of his childhood or even last week. He genuinely enjoyed connecting with people and making them laugh.

More stories starring Kevin (or “Beastie”) will be told at his Celebration of Life, which will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2020 at Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th St., Sheridan, with visitation from 3 p.m. until the time of service.

Memorial contributions may be presented to the Sheridan Youth Assistance Program, 24185 Hinesley Road, Sheridan, IN 46069.
