Inside Utilities
The Carmel Utilities Citizen’s Academy recently visited Republic Services Material Recovery Facility. Discussed during the tour was recycling. The City of Carmel, contracted with Republic Services offers weekly commingled recycling pick up on the same day as trash pick-up.
Recycling has changed substantially in the last couple of years due to restrictions. We are now processing much of our own recyclable waste.
When it comes to recycling, everyone has a part to play. Working together, we can make sure recyclable materials don’t end up in our lakes and landfills.
Recycling: Simple as 1-2-3
- Know what to throw: Cardboard, paper, metal cans, plastic bottles and jugs.
- Empty, clean dry: Keep all recyclables free of food and liquid.
- Don’t bag it: Never put recyclables in containers or bags.
Materials to recycle
- Paper and cardboard: Flattened cardboard, newspapers, magazines, office paper and common mail.
- Metal cans: Beverage and food cans.
- Plastic: Bottles and jugs; food and liquid containers with the lids on.
NEVER place these items in your recycling container:
No styrofoam, plastic bags and wrappers, food, electronics amd batteries, yard waste, diapers, soiled paper, clothing or shoes, tools, toys, construction or medical waste. When in doubt, THROW it out.

Regardless of what is going on in the recycling industry, the best practice is to try to reduce the amount of your personal waste. Going back to our great-grandparent’s era of reusing items and wasting as little as possible makes good financial sense. First, we should all “reduce” and “reuse.” Recycling is the last step.
