Carmel City Engineer Jeremy Kashman has been selected the APWA-Indiana Chapter Public Works Leader of the Year for 2017 by the American Public Works Association. Kashman was presented with the award at the APWA’s annual golf outing and meeting at Eagle Creek in Indianapolis.

Kashman, who has served as City Engineer since 2014, was recognized for the quality of his work as a public works leader and particularly for the way he has managed an aggressive schedule of projects for the past three years in Carmel.
“The work that Jeremy has done to manage an incredible number of road improvement projects, many of them taking place simultaneously, has already improved the quality of life for many of our residents, commuters and visitors to Carmel,” said Mayor Jim Brainard. “Jeremy is the hardest working City Engineer in the state, if not the country, and this is a well-deserved honor from his peers at the APWA.”
Since the beginning of 2016, Kashman has overseen a three-year, $217 million plan to improve local infrastructure, undertake major road projects and build more roundabouts to improve mobility, increase traffic safety and address the needs of many of Carmel’s oldest neighborhoods.
“I’m not sure there are many city’s the size of Carmel that has the Capital Improvement budget and the size and scope of work that Jeremy is currently overseeing in Carmel,” said Jamie Stetzel, APWA Chapter President.
Kashman was nominated by Mike McBride of American Structure Point, who also nominated Jeremy for a similar national award.
Kashman, who worked in the private sector for 12 years before joining the City of Carmel, spent four years as a contract employee for the nationally-recognized Keystone Parkway Reconstruction Project. That project replaced congested, signalized intersections with roundabout interchanges and received a number of honors, including an Engineering Excellence Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Indiana and a Bridge Design Award of Excellence by the Portland Cement Association.
“I am humbled to receive this honor, but I am even more excited to know that my dedicated staff and I are playing a role, alongside Mayor Brainard and our City Council, in increasing the quality of life for our local residents,” Kashman said. “I feel very fortunate to have, for the past several years, played a key role in the planning and implementation of the incredible vision that Mayor Brainard has for this community.”
