Old movie buffs, film junkies and all others interested in a Saturday afternoon at the movies are invited to join Hamilton North Public Library’s Classic Film Society. No fees, obligations, or contracts required. In fact, there’s not even pressure to join. Simply hang out with other classic film fans one Saturday a month for a movie, snacks, trivia and conversation.
Viewing the past through the lens of cinema in the company of other like-minded film enthusiasts is fun. It’s not merely nostalgic, however. “There’s truth in old movies,” HNPL Director Ann Hoehn said. “They’re authentic. They reflect history and the culture of that movie’s time period.”
She and others in the Classic Film Society also enjoy seeing well-known actors in their early years or before they became well-known. “I love seeing the actors as young stars,” Hoehn commented.
Hoehn’s favorite classic movie is Arsenic and Old Lace, but she’s really looking forward to the April 21 showing of The Defiant Ones. This 1958 version, directed by Stanley Kramer, stars Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis as two escaped convicts chained together, who must learn to get along to avoid capture. It will be shown at 2 p.m. at the Cicero branch at 209 W. Brinton St.
It’s been said that “the oldies are the goodies,” but is it true? Certainly decades of cinema cannot be judged by a single movie, so the public is encouraged to frequent HNPL’s monthly movie matinee. May’s film is the 1951 version of Angels in the Outfield, starring Paul Douglas, Janet Leigh, and Keenan Wynn. It airs from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 12 at the Cicero branch.
