Staff members and clients were excited to learn that the theme for this year’s SummerFest at Janus would be a carnival and circus atmosphere. After all, who can resist ring toss, panty hose bowling, corn hole, ping pong toss, bean bag toss and water games?

But things got a little dicey – and messy – when the action turned to the “Wheel of Misfortune” where four staff members sat and waited as clients each took a turn to spin the wheel and see what “misfortune” would be chosen for them. Among the possibilities: Cup of water, bucket of water, chocolate pudding, whipped cream, confetti egg, safe, squirt gun, wet sponges, silly string and 10 jumping jacks.

Needless to say, this was a big hit as clients got to choose which of the four staff members would be at their mercy. After lunch, the event became a big dance party that lasted the rest of the day.

SummerFest has been a much-anticipated annual celebration for clients and staff of Janus for more than 30 years. Clients take the day off work and are joined by volunteers, staff and visitors – more than 200 in all. SummerFest is the biggest event of the year where both staff and clients attend and participate.

The Janus Guild was also on hand.

“The Guild provides direct support to Janus staff by serving food and providing dozens of cookies for this fun event. We have several fundraising events throughout the year to assist Janus and thoroughly enjoy serving Janus clients and staff,” said Cathy Lundeen, president of The Love of Janus Guild.

Events like SummerFest and the next two fun events – a Halloween party and Christmas party – are a key part of what Janus works hard to accomplish.

“SummerFest is a day of festivities and fun that provides our clients with opportunities to learn team work, develop friendships and build self-confidence,” said Senior Vice president of Development Debbie Laird.
