Janice E. Smith, 95, Carmel, passed away on September 23, 2024. Jan was born on January 22, 1929, in LaGrange, Ind., to Orville and Lelia (Garlets) Nelson.
Jan loved being with family, playing bridge, and rooting for the Pacers and the Purdue Boilermakers. She was a very active member and officer of the Carmel chapter of Tri Kappa. She was a longtime member of Carmel United Methodist Church. Jan and her late husband, Jim, enjoyed extensive travel and cruises during their retirement, and spent cold winters in Sarasota, Fla.
Janice was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. We have many fond memories of large family dinners at Christmas and Easter holidays.
In addition to her parents, Jan was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Smith; son-in-law, Jerry Haskett; sisters, Oneita Nelson, Phyllis Meyer, Goldie Hooley; and brothers, Thurlow Nelson, Frazier Nelson, and Ralph Nelson.
Survivors include her children, Susan Haskett, Jim (Nancy) Smith, and Tom (Kim) Smith; grandchildren, Katie (Chris) Walker, Jamie (Erin) Haskett, and Rebecca (Jason) Deckard; Jan was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren, Tyler, Tate, and Grace Walker, J.D. and Will Haskett, and Austin, Isaac, and Andrew Deckard.
Family and friends will gather from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, September 27, 2024, at Carmel United Methodist Church, with the funeral service beginning at 3 p.m. Burial will immediately follow in Carmel Cemetery.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Janice be given to the Endowment Scholarship Fund, Carmel United Methodist Church, 621 S. Range Line Road, Carmel, IN 46032. Envelopes will be available at the church.
