James “Jim” Walter Zaiger

September 28, 1934 – February 17, 2023

James “Jim” Walter Zaiger, 88, Carmel, died on February 17, 2023. He was born on September 28, 1934, in St. Louis, Mo., to the late Henry and Gabriella Zaiger (nee Thiemet).

He attended St. Mary’s High School in St. Louis. It was in middle school that Jim met his future wife, MaryAnn (Stoeppel). She spotted him on his bicycle and declared he was the one for her. They were married May 14, 1955, having spent over 67 years of happiness together. The love and adoration Jim and MaryAnn shared for each other was truly extraordinary, allowing them to become soulmates. Their love for their faith and family was deep and abiding.

Through many years of hard work and perseverance, they built a wonderful life together. Jim started his career carrying the mail for the U.S. Postal Service. In 1966, he was sworn in as a U.S. Postal Inspector. Jim worked hard as a federal investigator and loved his career. After retirement he would often say, “I loved my job and would do it all over again. But I really like being paid to stay home.”

Retirement years were filled with many fun trips and adventures with children, grandchildren, and best friends, AnnaMarie and the late James Fortune. The memories will keep him alive in all our hearts forever.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his son, Mark Zaiger and daughter, Christine Zaiger; sister, Virginia Richmeyer; and brother, Henry Zaiger,

Jim leaves behind his lovely wife, MaryAnn and four children; Brian (Heather), Marian Sprague (Kurt), Karen Medernach (Paul), and Kris Wood (John); 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Family and friends will gather 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2023, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m.
