James Howard Mitchell

May 1, 1950 – January 23, 2020

James Howard Mitchell, 69, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2020, at Copper Trace in Westfield. James, a.k.a. “Bob,” was born on May 1, 1950, in Noblesville.

Bob was a 1968 graduate of Sheridan High School. He then went off to Purdue University for a short stint before he found himself following his dream of moving to Denver, Colo. Denver is where he spent the next 13 years as a member of the Dawson band. In 1986 he moved back to 512 E. 1st St. in Sheridan, where he spent the rest of his healthy years living and caring for his beloved mother. Bob worked for L & K Noe Excavating for 16 years before semi-retiring and taking on Cool Lake Golf Course. Cool Lake brought him so much joy, up until the end of his working career.

Bob was, without a doubt, driven by the sunshine in the sky. He loved to spend time outside soaking up the rays, fishing, reading a book, cruising in the jeep, and playing as MUCH golf as possible. He loved his golfing family and spent many hours just hanging with the guys. His favorite line to all of them at the course was, “Let’s go Laser and 8 Iron.”

Bob was quirky and famous for his one-liners. He had nicknames for everyone and about 10 nicknames of his own that everyone around town had for him. To a stranger meeting him, it became somewhat confusing, never truly understanding what his real name was. It also brought about a lot of laughter, which is what Bob was truly about. There was never a serious moment when he was around. Bob was a lot like a magnet. When people saw Bob, they were drawn to him for his light-hearted sense of humor.

Bob was a fan favorite to everyone. He spent many of his evenings supporting all the little league teams and Sheridan Blackhawk sports. He not only loved sports, but he loved getting to know the kids and their families. One of Bob’s new favorite pastimes became FaceTiming with his brother, Johnny, in North Carolina. He was always hoping to catch him mid-stroke on the golf course.

Bob had a very special place in his heart for Jessica and Jamie Wallace and Cort and Maddi Christy. Although Bob was never married nor had a family of his own, he was always considered family to these four.

Bob is survived by his brother, John (Marie) Mitchell; niece, Allison Mitchell; Nick, Lori, Cort, Ciera and Maddi Christy; and Mila Jane, Jessica and Jamie Wallace. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Ellen Mitchell.

Services for James Mitchell were held on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at Sheridan United Methodist Church, 207 E. 2nd St., Sheridan, where family and friends gathered prior to the time of services. The Rev. Jody Brown officiated.
