Sheridan Community Schools is proud to announce that Mr. Jake Chesney has been named the next head coach of the Sheridan Blackhawks football program. Chesney steps into the role following the legendary tenure of Coach Bud Wright, who led the Blackhawks for an incredible 59 seasons.

A lifelong Blackhawk, Chesney played four years of football at Sheridan High School before continuing his career at Trine University, where he played football while earning a degree in Finance. Over the past two years, he has served as an assistant coach for the Blackhawks and was promoted to Associate Head Coach midway through last season.

Kevin Wright, Carmel Head Football Coach, who served as Associate Head Coach with Jake last season noted: “Coach Jake Chesney is an exceptional young coach with the ability to motivate and connect with his players.  As a former player he understands and embraces the tradition of Sheridan Football and will be a tremendous leader of the program going forward.”

Several outstanding candidates applied for the position and the selection process for the new head coach was extensive, involving two rounds of interviews conducted by a committee of teachers, administrators, coaches, community members, and former players. Additionally, prior to the interviews, time was spent meeting with parents and players to understand their expectations for the program’s future in terms of leadership, vision, and character. Following the final round of interviews, the committee unanimously recommended Chesney to the Sheridan High School Administration and the Sheridan Community School Board of Trustees.

Sheridan High School Athletic Director Beth DeVinney expressed confidence in the selection, stating: “Jake has a passion for the game and brings a positive energy to all he does. Throughout the process, he demonstrated his love for coaching, his ability to motivate, and his deep understanding of Blackhawk Football. We are excited to see the impact he will have on the program.”

Chesney’s appointment marks the beginning of a new era for Sheridan football. His familiarity with the program and dedication to its success will ensure a seamless transition. His leadership, enthusiasm, and deep-rooted commitment to the Blackhawk community make him the ideal choice to carry on the tradition of excellence established by Coach Bud Wright.

Sheridan Community Schools congratulates Coach Chesney on his new role and looks forward to the continued success of Blackhawk Football under his leadership.
