From the Heart
Neither rain nor snow nor sleet nor the hardness of the bleachers shall keep grandparents from watching their grandchild perform in an event or play in a sport.
And so, on that blustery and very rainy Saturday when the Noblesville girls soccer team played in the semi state game in Kokomo, we were there. Our granddaughter, Abby Baker, is on the team.
Okay, so we improvised our watching the game. At the suggestion of our daughter-in-law, Angie, we watched from our car. You see, there was a parking lot on the east side of the soccer field where you could see most of the game.
So there we were, yelling for the Millers in the comfort of our warm and dry car … with heated seats.
We could not see the north end of the field and when the clock stopped with three seconds to go, we knew that was not good. Penn had scored, tying the game 1-1.
It took another two seven-minute overtime periods for us to win the game. We not only yelled but Grand Chuck honked our horn. The Millers were headed to the state finals!
Problem for us was that we would be in Tampa watching six-year-old Leah perform in a gymnastics meet in a sweaty gym with bleachers that are not friendly to a grandparent’s derriere. It will be an early morning wake up for us to arrive as her routine is first on the schedule.
Have I mentioned that being a grandparent can be both adventurous and exhausting? Also, when you have 10 grandchildren you must juggle your time and place to view their playing.
After Leah’s gymnastics meet, we will hurry home to cozy up on the sofa and tune in to the soccer game via IHSAA.org to watch the Noblesville girls face the Carmel girls in the state finals. Go Millers!
Next up on our schedule will be basketball season for Jake, golf for Emma, and added on our schedule in December will be our granddaughter, Natalie, singing and dancing in the Christmas show in front of the castle in the Magic Kingdom at Disney World.
It’s a crazy calendar Grand Chuck and I must keep up with, but a little rain and snow and heat and crowds will never stop us. We find ways to improvise and cheer.
And yes, it’s a WIN for us grandparents!
Trust me , we can relate.
We have committed to being in Boston (we live in SW Florida) for our grandson’s “Grand Person” day., November 8. We were to have spent the weekend.
BUT, our son is the head coach of HSE Lady Royals Volleyball.
We have used every point that we have ever earned to make this incredible weekend happen.
We will be in Muncie on Saturday to cheer on the best group of young ladies that have ever played for our son.
We have to cherish every moment.
And we do not blame you for staying in the car when you were in Kokomo. We were uo in Noblesville for the Volleyball Regionals and we kept reminding ourselves how lucky we are that our son coaches an indoor sport.
Take care.
