The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO) welcomes conductor and composer Steve Hackman on Sept. 18 to the Hilbert Circle Theatre in downtown Indianapolis for an exciting new fusion concert.
Maestro Hackman leads the orchestra for his all-new Uncharted Series work Gershwin X Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody in Blue featuring George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”: two of the most beloved, ubiquitous compositions in the history of music.
Each work challenged the traditions of their medium by thrillingly combining disparate genres of music: Queen fusing classical, opera, and vaudeville with rock and roll, and Gershwin melding classical with jazz and musical theatre. Bohemian Rhapsody in Blue follows this tradition by combining the pieces themselves, aligning and synthesizing their many kaleidoscopic musical sections to create a cohesive new whole that is at once Gershwin and Queen, and leaves you marveling at the genius of the original compositions.
The Uncharted Series creates new avenues for audiences to explore classical music through the lens of pop and rock genres. Arrive early to enjoy the lobby experience, including a bar with alcoholic and non-alcoholic selections, a live deejay, the chance to connect with ISO community partners IndyHub and the ISO’s young professionals’ group Forte, and Indy CD & Vinyl.
Tickets are on sale now at IndianapolisSymphony.org.
About Steve Hackman
A multi-hyphenate music powerhouse and creative visionary, Steve Hackman is a daring voice intent on redefining art music in the 21st century, “with an innovative brilliance and style reminiscent of the late, great maestro Leonard Bernstein” (Tom Alvarez, On the Aisle). Trained at the elite level classically but equally adept in popular styles, his breadth of musical fluency and technique is uncanny – he is at once a composer, conductor, producer, DJ, arranger, songwriter, singer, and pianist. He uses these polymathic abilities to create original music of incisive modernism yet rooted in elevated classicism.
Hackman’s groundbreaking orchestral fusions known as SYMPHONYFUSE, such as Brahms X Radiohead and The Resurrection Mixtape (Mahler X Notorious BIG X Tupac Shakur), are introducing the symphony orchestra to its future audience; he has conducted these pieces to sellout houses across the country with the orchestras of Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas, Seattle, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Colorado, Phoenix, Nashville, Oregon, Indianapolis, Grand Rapids, Columbus, Charlotte, Southwest Florida, Alabama, Colorado Music Festival, and the Boston Pops.
