Indianapolis steps up DUI enforcement this month

Under the direction of District Commander Lieutenant Jeff Payne, Troopers will be stepping up DUI enforcement this weekend in the Indianapolis District, which includes Hamilton County. Some Troopers will adjust their shifts and others will work on their day off to concentrate efforts in the overnight hours and increase manpower in areas known for high DUI crashes.

Lt. Payne stated, “Our mission is to increase police presence and prevent people from getting behind the wheel drunk. We hope our high visibility patrols will create voluntary compliance amongst those choosing to consume alcohol this weekend, but if someone makes the choice to drive drunk, we will find them.”

Last year in the month of December, the Indianapolis District had 125 crashes that involved an intoxicated driver. 33 of those resulted in injuries and two were fatal crashes. The Indianapolis District consists of Marion, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Shelby and Hancock counties. Troopers will continue to diligently patrol for aggressive and reckless drivers, as well as those driving impaired, in an effort to make our roadways safe for everyone.

The special DUI patrol this weekend is in conjunction with the “6 State Trooper Project,” a project in which six state police agencies join efforts at different times of the year to concentrate on a specific traffic violation. The six agencies include the Indiana State Police, Ohio Highway Patrol, Michigan State Police, Kentucky State Police, Pennsylvania State Police and the West Virginia State Police.
