Huskies shoot to win big over KIPP Indy Legacy

The REPORTER

A red-hot shooting night from Hamilton Heights’ Gavin Saunders – and for that matter, the entire Huskies’ team – turned into a huge Wednesday win.

Heights rolled past KIPP Indy Legacy 97-53 in a home game. The Pride came into the Huskies’ gym with a 10-4 record, but Heights dominated this game, scoring at least 21 points in each quarter of its Senior Night game.

“That’s a great team win,” said Huskies coach Chad Ballenger. “That’s one of those games as a coach, I was worried our guys wouldn’t take them serious just because they weren’t familiar with them.” Ballenger said KIPP has three “pretty good” players and credited his players with containing them.

There was no containing Saunders, a senior who put together a memorable performance on Senior Night. Saunders scored 51 points on 18-of-22 field goal shooting. Saunders made all 12 of his 2-point attempts and went 6-of-10 from 3-point range in what Ballenger called an “unbelievable shooting night.”

“We ran sets for him,” said Ballenger. “He got free, he knocked shots down. He got to the rim, he attacked the rim off the drive and he hit 3s. And his teammates got him the ball.”

Heights shot 61 percent as a team, making 36 of 59 attempts. Rees Knapp poured in 16 points, while Dreydin Serna scored 13 points. The Huskies shared the ball well with 20 assists; Tyler Champion and Carson Felger both dished out six assists each.

Serna led the rebounds with six, while Felger collected five. Saunders also made four steals.

Heights is 10-6 and plays at Winchester Saturday afternoon.
