The Hamilton Heights girls wrestling team will have five wrestlers compete in tonight’s Indiana High School Girls Wrestling state tournament tonight at Lawrence North.
The Huskies advanced their wrestlers after the team placed second out of 42 teams in the North Regionals of the IHSGW Championships at Maconaquah on Jan. 5. out of 42 teams on Jan. 5.
Tonight’s state tournament begins at 6:30 p.m. Heights was the team state runner-up last year.
Markaela Pugh pinned her way to the regional title at 106 pounds, advancing to state to defend her title at that weight. Pugh, a sophomore, faces North Knox’s Lilly Gough in the first round.
Ellie Hunter is the defending runner-up at 88 pounds, and was the runner-up this year at the regional.
Hunter faces Penn’s Jaden Johnson in the first round. Heights 182-pounder Alexis Harber also placed second at the regional; she finished third at state last year and faces Erica Dillworth from Maconaquah at state this year.
Kami Speicher got Heights’ third regional runner-up place at heavyweight. She will wrestle Abby Kimes from North Putnam at state.
Junior Adyson Baber placed third at 152 pounds. Baber, who placed third at state last year, is hoping to go all the way this year. Baber faces Eva Hatcher from Knightstown in the first round.
The Huskies are coached by head coach Gary Myers along with assistant coaches Bruce O’Neal, Jarrod Logan, Cody McCance, and Riley White.
