Hamilton Heights got off to a strong start for its season-opener, as the Huskies beat Danville 58-41 in a Saturday home game.
Heights led 18-7 after the first quarter, with Camryn Runner scoring 10 points. Both Runner and Kaylee Rhoton hit two 3-pointers during that period. Heights led 31-18 at halftime. The Warriors outscored the Huskies slightly during the third period, but Heights ran away with the fourth quarter.
The Huskies had an outstanding long-range shooting night, draining 15 3-pointers. Runner had six, while Mia Shields poured in five 3s, including three in the third quarter. Rhoton made three triples and Ella Hickok had one.
Runner scored 25 points, while Shields added 19 points.
“Played a really well-coached and physical Danville team tonight,” said Heights coach Keegan Cherry. “Our girls played very unselfish and knocked down big shots at key times. The first game of the season is always a challenge with limited scouting opportunity. So being able to recognize personnel and adjust to what Danville was doing defensively was key. And I thought overall we did a good job. The expectations are high for this group and we know we have lots to work on. With Noblesville up next, I just hope we can compete.”
Heights will travel to Noblesville on Friday.
