The Hamilton Heights girls basketball team dominated its Senior Night game on Thursday, beating Lewis Cass 46-10 in a Hoosier Conference East Division contest.
It was a stellar defensive effort for the Class 3A No. 7 Huskies, as they never allowed the Kings to score more than five points during a quarter. Heights led 17-1 after the first period, with Camryn Runner pouring in eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Also during that first quarter, senior Mia Shields had five points and senior MyKayla Moran added four points.
“Really happy for both MyKayla and Mia,” said Heights coach Keegan Cherry. “Thought they both played really well and did a nice job handling the festivities associated with the evening.”
The Huskies led 27-3 at halftime, then went ahead 40-8 after three quarters. Three Heights players finished in double figures: Runner led the way with 18 points and four 3s, while Shields drained three 3s while scoring 15 points. Moran finished the game with 10 points.
“Overall, thought the team played really unselfish tonight and did an excellent job of moving the basketball.”
The 10 points the Huskies allowed was the least number of points given up by a Heights team since Nov. 18, 2016, when the Huskies beat Eastern, also by the score of 46-10.
Heights is 2-0 in East Division play and won its ninth consecutive game. The Huskies are 13-3 overall and travel to Westfield on Saturday afternoon for a date with the 4A No. 6 Shamrocks.
“Reality sets in tomorrow when we get to work preparing for Westfield, one of the best teams in the state,” said Cherry. “I hope we are able to compete. Regardless, it will be an opportunity to learn and get better. And hopefully prepare us for remaining conference teams and the tournament.”
