NOBLESVILLE – The Hamilton Heights girls basketball team has been one of the busiest teams in the early going this season, having already played six games.
The Huskies have also been among the winningest teams so far. Heights, ranked No. 4 in this week’s ICGSA Class 3A poll, ran its record to 5-1 after beating county opponent Guerin Catholic 66-23 Tuesday at the Eagles’ Nest.
The Golden Eagles scored the first two points of the game after Ava Bills made a layin. It was all Heights after that, as the Huskies ran through the first quarter, going on a long run to lead 16-2 by the end of the period. Camryn Runner scored nine points and Katie Brown scored five, with both hitting one 3-pointer.
“I think that’s probably one of our better starts in a long time,” said Heights coach Keegan Cherry. “Our energy was great. Our press was really good.”
Heights poured in 21 more points in the second period to lead 37-7 at halftime. The Huskies finished the half on a 17-0 run, with Brown putting in two triples and Runner scoring another 13 points.
Heights stretched that spurt to 19-0 to begin the third quarter, as Runner opened that period with a layin. Guerin Catholic freshman Gianna Morelli had a solid quarter for the Golden Eagles, scoring eight points. The Huskies led 57-15 going into the fourth period.
Runner finished the game with 30 points, while Hickok scored 12 and Brown added 11. Morelli’s eight points led Guerin Catholic.
“We’ll learn and we will get better,” said GC coach Danielle Cardinal.
Hamilton Heights will take a couple weeks off, returning to action Nov. 29 at North Miami. The Golden Eagles are 1-3 and host Heritage Christian on Saturday to begin Circle City Conference play.
