Huskies break through for first win

With such a young football team, Hamilton Heights had to endure some growing pains during the first part of the season.
Now at the midway point, the Huskies are starting to grow up.
Heights got its first win of the season Friday, beating Northwestern 14-6 on the road in a Hoosier Conference game. Not only was it a first win, but it was a victory over a Tigers team that was 3-1 coming into this game.
“I’m really, really excited for our kids,” said Heights coach Mitch Street. “I think we’ve been close a couple different times. We just had some failures to execute and finish plays and finish drives and finish games. So getting our first win’s definitely huge for our kids, and they put the work in this week, too.”
Blake Webel was responsible for all 14 of the Huskies’ points. Webel punched in a touchdown from the one-yard line midway through the first quarter to get Heights on the board at 6-0.
Northwestern scored in the second quarter, and went into halftime ahead 7-6. But Webel got it done again, running the ball in to the end zone from the two-yard line early in the fourth. Webel then successfully ran in a two-point conversion try. Heights then kept the Tigers at bay in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
“We’re playing about six or seven sophomores right now,” said Street. “Some of those guys are starting to grow up a little bit. It’s good. He had his best game of the season.”
Webel finished the game with 181 yards on 36 carries. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Andis was 5-of-11 passing for 71 yards, with senior Evan Warner making two of those catches.
Heights is now 1-4 for the season. The Huskies host Noblesville next week.
