Any coach will tell you the best way to bounce back after a tough loss is to play right away the next night.
Hamilton Heights did just that on Saturday. The Huskies rebounded after falling to Noblesville on Friday by returning home and cruising past Madison-Grant 57-27.
“Anytime you have a game like we did on Friday night against a really good basketball team in Noblesville, it’s nice to be able to play that next night and get a great bounce-back win,” said Heights coach Keegan Cherry. “Those girls from Madison-Grant really compete, play hard. Fantastic people at Madison-Grant. Dr. (Scott) Deetz, superintendent, was here tonight. It was good to see him. New coach. So those girls really play hard and they’re adjusting to a new system and they’re going to have some success down the road.”
The Huskies were in control from the start, leading 9-0 after the first quarter. Heights extended its lead to 21-7 by halftime; Camryn Runner scored 13 points in that first half. The Huskies then ran through the third quarter by scoring 26 points; Mia Shields had seven points during that period and Kaylee Rhoton made two 3s.
Cherry said Heights was able to “do some different things offensively” and defensively in the game.
“It was good just to play some of those younger kids and get them some varsity minutes and get them some reps in a live-game situation,” said Cherry.
Runner finished the game with 24 points, including four 3-pointers, with Shields adding 12 points. Rhoton finished with eight and MyKayla Moran scored seven.
The Huskies are 2-1 and play at Guerin Catholic on Tuesday.
