The Hamilton Southeastern softball team dropped two games in Terre Haute on Saturday, falling to Mooresville 5-3 in its first game and 11-8 to Northview in its second game.
The Class 4A No. 5 Royals scored the first run of the first game, with Nicole Lang hitting a center field single to score Abby Taylor in the top of the first inning. The Pioneers answered with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first.
Southeastern had to wait until the fourth inning, but it finally answered when Kaelin Wincek led off with a solo homer to center field. Taylor would give HSE the lead with a left field single to send Kennedy Morgan home. The Royals held the lead until Mooresville scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
In the second game, Northview blitzed Southeastern for five runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Royals got on the board in the third when Nicole Dillow scored on an error. Still, HSE trailed 9-1 after three innings.
The Royals got going in the fifth inning, scoring five runs. Libby Ratliff singled home Taylor, then Lillian Leiner scored on a fielder’s choice from Lang. Wincek then sent a double into left field to score Morgan and Ratliff; Wincek later got home on a single by Courtney Kocal.
Just like that, HSE trimmed Northview’s lead to 9-6. But Northview added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make the score 11-6. The Royals did get two more runs in the seventh inning: Kocal singled home Lang, then Wincek scored on a Taylor single.
Taylor finished the game 3-for-5, while Wincek, Kocal and Dillow all hit 2-for-4. Wincek and Kocal both drove in two runs.
The Royals are 2-2 and will play at Mount Vernon on Monday.
