The Hamilton Southeastern boys lacrosse team scored an upset of No. 1-ranked Cathedral 12-11 on Tuesday.
The fourth-ranked Royals started off slow with a couple of quick penalties and found themselves down 4-1 at the end of the first. In the second quarter, Southeastern found its rhythm with nine shots to Cathedral’s three. Tyler Renschen and Keegan Logan found the net for the Royals and only one goal was scored by the Irish. The Royals went into the half down 5-3.
The third quarter was a back and forth battle with both teams possessing the ball well making it tough of the defense, the Irish lead coming out of the third 8-5. In the fourth quarter the momentum started to swing towards the Royals. After a quick goal by Cathedral, Lukas DeVoe and freshman Ryan Kemp found the net three times to rally the troops get the crowd back into the game.
Cathedral answered with two quick goals but with 4:30 left in the game, it was all HSE the rest of the night. David Sage, Ryan Kemp, and Keegan Logan all scored to knot the score at 11-11.
With two minutes on the clock, Southeastern played patient to make sure it would take the final shot. After a dodge by Renschen and DeVoe and then another by Logan the ball moved to Cam Smith who beat two defenders and took a shot as time expired. The referee signaled the goal was good and the Royals celebrated a hard-fought victory.
