1838 – The town of Metamora was founded with a plat that consisted of 42 lots. The site was chosen for its position on the Whitewater Canal.
1912 – Karl Sekulovich was born in Chicago and grew up in Gary, where he was active in the drama department of Emerson High School. Under the screen name Karl Malden, he became a skilled character actor, appearing in scores of films. He won an Academy Award for his role in “Streetcar Named Desire.”
1912 – The Spades Park Branch Library was dedicated in Indianapolis. Andrew Carnegie built 164 libraries in Indiana, and this is the only one featuring an Italianesque style. The Spades Park branch continues to serve the community near Brookside Park.
1931 – According to a report from the National Industrial Conference Board, each Indiana citizen had an average net worth of $2,977. The average annual income for each working Hoosier was $692.
1943 – Harvey Weir Cook was killed in an airplane crash while training American pilots in New Caledonia. Born in Wilkinson, he was a decorated pilot of World War I and helped build the first municipal airport in Indianapolis.
1955 – Crispus Attucks High School, led by Coach Ray Crowe, defeated Gary Roosevelt to win the state basketball tournament. It was the first all African-American team in the nation to win a state title. On the Attucks team was Oscar Robertson, who went on to fame in professional basketball.
