Carmel used a fast start to upset Class 4A No. 5 Ben Davis 65-60 in a Friday Metropolitan Conference game at the Giants’ gym.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 20-10 lead after the first quarter, then expanded their advantage to 37-24 at halftime. As a result, Carmel was able to absorb a strong third period by the Giants and then closed the fourth quarter by making free throws.
Four players reached double figures for the ‘Hounds. Cole Jenkins scored 16 points and also handed out five assists. Eddie Gill scored 13 points and led the boards with seven rebounds. Andrew Owens added 12 points and John Michael Mulloy chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.
Carmel remains in second place in the MIC standings at 4-1, with Warren Central leading at 4-0. The two teams will meet on Feb. 16 at Warren.
The ‘Hounds are 10-5 overall and are back home in the Eric Clark Activity Center tonight, hosting 3A No. 1 New Castle at 7:30 p.m. The Trojans are 16-0.
