The Sheridan boys basketball team was overwhelmed by Rossville on Friday night in the second game of a girls-boys Hoosier Heartland Conference doubleheader at Hobbs Memorial Gym.
The Blackhawks lost to the Hornets 66-26. Rossville was merciless in the first quarter, leading 16-0 at the 4:20 mark before Will Zachery got Sheridan on the board with a 3-pointer. The Hornets then outscored the ‘Hawks 11-1 to take a 27-4 lead by the end of the period.
It didn’t get any better in the second quarter, which Rossville cruised through to take a 44-9 lead into the locker room at halftime. Kyle Eden hit a 3-pointer for Sheridan midway through the period, and Nick Roberts got a basket at the end of the quarter.
“We tell them in practice, we’ve got to practice harder,” said Blackhawks coach Chris Schrank. “One way or the other, they’re going to learn the lesson. Hopefully that’s what it takes. We’ve had a couple that we have felt like our effort wasn’t where it needs to be. We control how the rest of this plays out. If we want it to be better, then we got to work harder.”
Sheridan played better in the third quarter, outscoring the Hornets 13-11. Nolan Buckner and Eden each hit 3s as part of an 8-0 run for the ‘Hawks. Rossville outscored Sheridan 11-4 in the fourth period, with Corbin Murray getting all four of the Blackhawks’ points.
Eden led the Sheridan scoring with eight points. Roberts and Ethan Moistner both collected three rebounds.
“We got to figure out how to handle pressure,” said Schrank. “We’ve got to play hard. We’ve got to focus. We’ll really get back to some basics and make sure that we care of that stuff in the next week.”
Sheridan is 0-2 in the conference and 3-6 overall. The Blackhawks are back in action on Tuesday when they host North Montgomery.
