After the first few days of meets, indoor track and field athletes from around the state are seeing how they stack up against each other as they try to qualify for the Hoosier State Relays.
The Relays take place on Saturday, March 23 at Indiana University. There will be two separate meets: The Large Schools (Classes 4A, 5A and 6A for football) will have their meet at 10 a.m., with the Small Schools (Classes 1A, 2A and 3A) to follow at 4 p.m.
The top 24 qualifiers in the running and relay events, long jump and shot put qualify, as will the top 18 high jump and pole vault. Qualifying dates run through Sunday, March 17.
Already several Hamilton County runners are high up on the qualifying lists. On the girls side, Carmel’s Phoebe Bates is on top of the 3200 run list, with Hamilton Southeastern’s Kennedy Drish first in the pole vault. Drish is a two-time state champion in that event, while Bates won state in the 1600 run last year. Southeastern’s 4×400 relay and Noblesville’s 4×800 relay are also top qualifiers as of this week.
Hayden Tobias of Fishers currently leads the boys shot put. Meanwhile, Guerin Catholic’s girls distance medley team is on top of that event’s list in the Small School division.
