Hamilton Heights had a tough night at North Montgomery on Friday, as the Chargers beat the Huskies 14-7.
North Montgomery scored a first-quarter touchdown off a 38-yard pass, then made a tackle for a safety seconds later to take an 8-0 lead. Those would be the game’s only points until late in the fourth quarter, when Austin Sulc’s 5-yard touchdown run gave the Chargers a 14-0 lead.
The Huskies scored their points not long after Sulc’s touchdown. Tyler Champion caught a 14-yard pass from Bodie Derrer, and Teigan Scoles followed that up with the extra-point kick.
“We made mistakes,” said Heights coach Jon Kirschner. “We struggled to come back. Our defense was on the field all night. We couldn’t get much going offensively.”
Still, the Huskies were within one score towards the end of the game.
“We came up short tonight,” said Kirschner. “It was an opportunity for us to see some things we got to fix. We got to get back to work tomorrow.”
Kirschner said that while things didn’t pan out as Heights hoped, “the thing I credit our kids for is when we did make mistakes, we did still continue to rally.”
Derrer finished 9-of-21 with 120 yards, while Champion had five receptions.
The Huskies are 1-1 and host Rensselaer Central next Friday for their home opener.
