Sheridan returned to action Friday after a week off, and wasted little time getting back to business.
The Blackhawks took care of Clinton Prairie 34-7 in a Hoosier Heartland Conference game at the Gophers’ field. Sheridan shrugged off a slow first half and cruised through the second half, thanks to another dominating performance from Cameron Hovey.
“We didn’t play very well in the first half,” said ‘Hawks coach Bud Wright. “We finally got it going. Second half we made a couple adjustments and we got it going in the second half.”
Sheridan got on the board in dramatic fashion early in the first quarter, when Jalen Herron intercepted a pass and took it 100 yards into the end zone. Prairie tied the game in the second period, but Hovey gave the Blackhawks a 14-7 halftime lead when he ran 55 yards for a touchdown at the very end of the quarter.
Hovey picked up another touchdown a little over a minute into the third quarter, this one a 32-yard run. After that, Sheridan led 21-7 and went through the remainder of the game unbothered. The ‘Hawks added two more rushing touchdowns in the fourth, with Hovey making a 39-yard run into the end zone, then Herron added a late score with a 20-yard rush.
Wright also praised his defense for playing better in the second half, especially when it came to the Gophers’ quarterback, who the ‘Hawks held to 3-of-15 passing in the latter half.
“We made a couple adjustments and that helped us out, too,” said Wright.
Hovey totaled 244 yards rushing on 28 carries.
Sheridan is 1-1 in the conference and 3-1 overall. The Blackhawks will be back at Bud Wright Stadium next Friday to host Taylor in another Hoosier Heartland Conference game.
