Sheridan continued to put more distance between itself and the rest of the Hoosier Heartland Conference pack Friday night when it hosted Clinton Prairie.
The Blackhawks ran to a 35-0 lead after the first quarter, then cruised to a 63-8 victory over the Gophers. With the win, Sheridan improved to 4-0 in HHC play, and also knocked Prairie out of the second-place spot; CP was 2-0 in the conference coming into the game.
The only other team without a loss in the HHC is Eastern, which has only played one conference contest so far (the Comets will take on Carroll this afternoon in a game at Lucas Oil Stadium).
The Blackhawks are 4-1 overall.
Sheridan’s win was never in doubt. Joe Callahan got the ‘Hawks on the board right away, rushing in to the end zone from 41 yards just 75 seconds into the game. That was the first of five first-quarter touchdowns.
Drake Delph scored the second, a run in from 17 yards. Delph then tossed a pass to Ange Gnamkey, who got to the end zone for a 29-yard touchdown reception. Callahan zoomed in for a 48-yard score, and Delph found Nick Burnell for a 37-yard TD with just five seconds left in the quarter.
“We jumped on them early and put them away in the first quarter,” said Sheridan coach Bud Wright.
Other touchdowns came on short runs in the middle quarters. Joe Callahan scored late in the second, while Gunnar Williams and Cameron Hovey both found the end zone in the third period. Tanner Swindle finished the scoring when he took a 43-yard kickoff return in for a fourth-quarter touchdown.
Williams kicked successful extra points for the first seven touchdowns, with freshman Cole Jackson kicking the last two extra points.
Callahan rang up 164 yards in 14 carries on the ground. Delph was 4-of-6 passing, with Gnamkey’s two receptions totaling 54 yards.
Sheridan continues HHC play next week by traveling to Taylor.
