Harold Hobson

May 8, 1927 – April 24, 2019

Harold Hobson, 91, Sheridan, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, April 24, 2019 at Wellbrooke of Westfield. Born May 8, 1927 in Clarksville, Ind., he was the son of the late Alva K. and Minnie (Johnson) Hobson.

Harold attended Jackson Central High School but was not able to graduate with his class, having left school during his senior year to enlist in the military. Fortunately for Harold, he was able to complete his graduation requirements and receive his diploma while serving his country during World War II. He began his service with the U.S. Army Air Forces, formerly known as the U.S. Army Air Corps, before being reassigned to serve in the newly created United States Air Force. Harold was very proud and humbled that he, along with his five brothers, were all able to serve.

Not too long after returning home (just a little over a year to be more specific), Harold, along with his brother Harley, eloped to Arkansas with two sisters, Norma and Martha Baird, leaving as siblings and returning as in-laws. Through 68 years of marriage, they never ruined a family get-together with bickering or sibling squabbles.

Almost everything in Harold’s life was centered around family. He loved going fishing and playing golf with his sons. He never let them forget about the time he sank a hole-in-one during his first time playing a round of golf, and he was always eager to share the story with those who hadn’t yet heard it.

During his younger years, Harold worked for Stewart Warner and Cincinnati Galvanizing Co., as well as Hightshue Brothers Grain Elevator in Sheridan. In 1973, he would go to work for United Feeds in Sheridan and remain with the company for many years as a supervisor for the truck drivers. Known to coworkers as “High Pockets” or “The Big Man” (due to his tall stature), in 1992 Harold retired, affording he and Norma the time do more of the things they enjoyed – and first on that list was traveling. They loved heading out with their favorite couple, Harley and Martha. Food was usually involved at some point along the way, and Bob Evans was a popular spot, unless someone was fixing up a helping of fried green tomatoes or just about anything smothered in tomato gravy. Harold loved to pick on Martha, and everybody enjoyed giving it right back to him. They frequently reminded Harold of the time that he took Harley for a ride in his pride and joy, his new Model T Ford, and somehow ended up ejecting Harley from the car and into a ditch full of poison ivy.

Harold, a devout Christian, was a member of the Baker’s Corner Wesleyan Church and a life member of the K.V. Elliott American Legion Post 67 of Sheridan

Harold is survived by the love of his life, Norma Janiece (Baird) Hobson. She and Harold were married on October 9, 1950. He is also survived by his three sons, Stephen Allen Hobson (Joyce), Sheridan, Gerald Wayne “Jerry” Hobson (Anita), Arcadia, and Charles David “Chuck” Hobson, Fishers; seven grandchildren, Mark Hobson (Joy), Eric Hobson (Theresa), Susan Steward (David), Vanessa Moistner (Donovan), Robert Hobson (Tiffany), Melissa Hobson and Charles Hobson, Jr. (Cindy); 17 great-grandchildren, Lora Hobson, Abbie Hobson, Koia Campbell, Brettin Campbell, Melissa Teague, Makayla Teague, Kyra Steward, Ethan Moistner, Abby Moistner, Zeke Hobson, Everly Hobson, Matthew Bowman, Brianna Basler, Austin Basler, Hailey Hobson, Reed Hobson and Alex Hobson; his great-great-grandchild, Brantley Bowman; and by his brother, Harley W. Hobson (Martha) of Zionsville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Peggy Darlene Hobson; sister, Mary Mendenhall; four brothers, Allison, Raymond, Carl and Frank Hobson; and by his childhood best friend, Napoleon.
