June 4, 1931 – February 19, 2025
Harold Andrew Pitts, 93, Sheridan, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, February 19, 2025, at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville. Born June 4, 1931, in Hamilton County, he was the son of the late Percy Milton and Rowena Mae (Dell) Pitts.
He was a 1949 graduate of Sheridan High School, and a member of the Sheridan First Christian Church, where he served the congregation as a Deacon for many years before being appointed Deacon Emeritus. His strong faith helped guide him throughout his life.
Harold married the love of his life, Marcia Lee Fancher, on October 18, 1953. Anyone they met could instantly see their love for each other in the way that Harold would tease her, and she would just roll her eyes, and shake her head slowly with a subtle grin. Together they built a beautiful family, and to Harold there was nothing more important than that.
Growing up, Harold helped his dad on the farm. Those early years, doing the grunt work around the farm, helped shape his life in ways he never would have imagined. With his attention to detail and strong work ethic, Harold turned his attention to carpentry for a few years. However, the call to return to farming was just too strong, so that is exactly what he did. Together, he and Marcia successfully operated their family farm for more than 50 years.
Harold had a lifelong involvement with sports – playing, coaching, and watching his sons play. He enjoyed his time coaching Little League, and in later years transitioned to running the field sidelines as a stats keeper for Sheridan Blackhawk Football.
Harold actively followed his son Greg’s racing career as well. Tinkering with the car was always a bonus, but spending time with his family and the racing community was what he enjoyed the most about the experience.
Another favorite activity was the annual fishing trips to Pelican Lake in Minnesota, starting in the early days of his marriage with his in-laws, to eventually taking his own kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. Many hours were spent in the boat telling fish stories and sharing life lessons.
He also liked to play cards, hosting Euchre Club along with Marcia at their house for many years.
Harold was a very giving man who would do anything for anyone. He never looked for a thank you or any acknowledgement at all. He humbly helped those in need because it was the right thing to do.
Harold is survived by two sons, Charles David Pitts of Sheridan and Jeffrey Lynn Pitts (Kathy) of Atlanta; his two granddaughters, whom he talked about every chance he was afforded, Megan McGuire (Mathew) of Atlanta and Meredith Cripe (Andrew) of Sheridan; and his pride and joy, his five great-grandchildren, Ashtyn, Grant, Jackson, Madelyn, and Jacob, who immediately became “Grandpa Great’s” entire world the moment each one entered this world. Also surviving are one sister, one brother, and one brother-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Percy Milton and Rowena Mae (Dell) Pitts; by his loving wife, Marcia Lee (Fancher) Pitts; and his son, Gregory Allan Pitts. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, one half-brother, one sister-in-law, and by his loving companion, Rebecca “Becky” Mendenhall.
Visitation and services were held Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at the Sheridan First Christian Church, 107 W. 3rd St., Sheridan. Burial followed at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan. Reverend Michael Srbljan officiated.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be presented to the Sheridan First Christian Church, P.O. Box 111, Sheridan, IN 46069.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Kercheval Funeral Home in Sheridan.
