Harley-Davidson of Indianapolis, 12400 Reynolds Drive, Fishers, and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department are committed to identifying important motorcycle and driver safety tips as Hoosiers hit the roads this fall.
Motorcyclists and drivers can experience some of the most picturesque and memorable road trips throughout the fall. The weather is temperate, the tree-lined roads are filled with beautiful autumn colors, and football games and pumpkin patches are around every corner. As bikers and drivers experience the season, they should be aware that fall road conditions are prone to unforeseen distractions and potential accidents.
“Unfortunately, I am often reminded that motorcyclists are much more likely to get injured in crashes than drivers in vehicles,” said David Dellen, co-owner of Harley-Davidson of Indianapolis. “Yet, most accidents are caused by an apparent lack of road safety precautions by both bikers and drivers. Harley-Davidson of Indianapolis is proud to partner with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department to offer valuable accident prevention tips for our Hoosier road warriors.”
This time of year is known for the leaves changing and the temperatures getting colder, but fall time also presents some unique challenges to drivers.
“Being aware of these potential dangers before you get in your vehicle can help keep you, your family, and others on the roadways safe,” explained IMPD Chief Randal Taylor.
Top fall biker safety tips
The views may be beautiful but driving in the fall can be very dangerous. Whether you’re an experienced or newly licensed biker, follow these three tips for pertinent biker safety.
- Wear a helmet. According to the CDC, helmets are 37 percent effective in preventing biker deaths, and helmets reduce the risk of head injury by 69 percent.
- The beautiful autumn leaves can pose increased danger on the road. Avoid any distractions and keep a keen eye on the road to avoid fall foliage obstacles such as downed tree limbs and dense leaf build up.
- Fog can set the scene for a spooky season, but festivities aside, if you need to hop on the bike, be aware of foggy areas around hills, water and dense trees and stay a significant distance away from cars in front of you.
Top fall driver safety tips
- Be aware of wet leaves on the roadways, which may cause slippery surfaces, and could cover potholes or lane markings. Drive slowly on leaf-covered roadways and avoid breaking hard.
- Be aware of the fog and frost, which are more prevalent this time of year, especially in the early morning hours.
- Watch out for critters, including deer. Deer accidents are common in the fall because it’s mating season. If you see a deer, proceed with caution and slow down, as they often travel in groups.
- Prepare an emergency kit for your car. The kit should include essential items to keep in your vehicle to help you stay prepared & safe in case of an emergency.
It is critical for bikers and riders to be aware of seasonal changes and the effects they can have on road safety conditions. Harley-Davidson of Indianapolis and IMPD are committed to supporting biker and rider safety, ensuring Hoosiers are supported as seasons change.
