Hamilton County is demolishing a building at 694 Logan St., Noblesville. County officials say the building has become increasingly dilapidated and poses health and safety risks due to environmental issues.
“The building was hit by lightning several years ago and the repairs made to shore up the building have started to fail, leaving the building’s facade unstable. That instability means we’ll have to remove the brick by hand,” the county’s superintendent of Buildings and Grounds said. “The building is also not ADA compliant. Costs to make it compliant would have been prohibitive. We have a responsibility to our employees and the public to address these safety issues.”
There have also been several reports of pedestrians being struck at the intersection of 8th and Logan streets in recent months. County officials hope demolition of the building and better lighting will increase the line of site for cars turning west from 8th Street.
“Nearly all our employees and anyone with county business cross this intersection twice daily walking from the county parking garage to the Judicial Building,” County Commissioner Mark Heirbrandt said. “We have plans to install grass, benches, and improved lighting on the lot to create a more welcoming and visible walkway for those crossing the intersection.”
Hamilton County does not have any immediate plans for the parcel but does plan to use the space to mobilize construction crews for the southward expansion of the Judicial Building in the coming year.
Demolition may require temporary road and sidewalk closures.
School busses can BARELY make the turn now with construction barricades and those ridiculous pedestrian crossing signs stuck in the middle of the street!
Watch they will find a way to put an apartment building there? The old Noblesville is gone? How sad!
I literally gasped when we drove by the other day, seeing another part of our amazing history, and old town feel vanish. Our history is so important, and where we have come from. And it will be to late once they realize the errors of their ways, and everything has been removed. We are the only country that does not value the artistry of our fore fathers. The building had nothing to do with the pedestrian and vehicle accidents there. It was the inconsiderate me first drivers, not knowing how to yield to pedestrian traffic. They see a green light, and they go forgetting to check for people needing to cross the street there. I have a feeling this will not solve the problem until our society wakes up, and become more caring, and aware of others. I myself was almost hit there just a few months back. But it was a anxious driver just not paying attention to anything but their own needs. And I was standing next to three intimidating looking sherriffs. They could not have missed us. They were just living in their me me me world. One of the officers held me back from stepping in front of the inconsiderate driver.
