NOBLESVILLE – The Class 3A No. 12 Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles lost to the No. 6 Bishop Chatard Trojans 49-13 in the Sectional 28 championship game on its home field on Friday night.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early after Bishop Chatard Senior quarterback Drew Vanvleet tossed three touchdown passes to jump out to a 21-0 lead. Guerin was able to quickly respond as sophomore quarterback Malcolm Houze found senior wide receiver Will Fremion often on the next drive en route to the first score. Vanvleet (who holds multiple Division I offers) responded by taking his team all the way to the end zone to push the lead to 28-6 before the half.
The second half was no different from the first as the Trojans continued their assault through the air with two more touchdown tosses and a run. By that time, the clock was running due to the margin of the score. Houze did connect with Fremion again for the final score of the night. After the score senior linebacker Anthony Ferrucci and Fremion held a long heartfelt hug for what will be the last game donning the Golden Eagles uniform.
Houze finished the game 26-of-42 for 289 yards and the two touchdowns. Fremion had the two TD catches, totaling 11 for the game. Alex Gibbs had eight receptions.
This year’s GCHS team will graduate 12 seniors. Amongst those graduating from Guerin are several All-Conference standouts: Will Fremion, Anthony Ferrucci, Evan Guenthner, Josh Holba and Luke Moody. While the team did not achieve the sectional championship there were several great moments throughout the season where they ended the season 7-5. After two straight losing seasons, this team was able to turn in a better performance as they look to grow in the 2023 season in what will be coach Tom Dilley’s 10th season.
