CARMEL – The Carmel swim teams opened their new natatorium in style on Friday.

The Greyhounds hosted the Carmel Winter Invitational at their beautiful brand-new pool, a facility worthy of the 38-time defending girls state champions and the 10-time defending boys state champions. The ‘Hounds won both meets easily, with the girls team scoring 742 points and the boys team totaling 662.5 points.

“It’s a great way to break in this new pool and have great energy, have a giant scoreboard, fast swimming,” said Carmel coach Chris Plumb. Since this was the first-ever meet, every first-place swim at the meet is officially a pool record.

The Greyhounds welcomed several good team from around the Midwest, with Zionsville, Homestead and Fort Wayne Carroll competing, along with Upper Arlington from Ohio and St. Charles Preparatory, a boys school from Illinois. Plumb said it was a “great opportunity to see what the state competition is going to be like and run through the lineup.”

“I think by having so many teams here, we had a lot of great races,” said Plumb.

Carmel’s girls won nine of the 11 events at the meet. Olympic gold medalist Alex Shackell picked up two individual victories in the 200 freestyle and the backstroke, while Molly Sweeney won the butterfly and breaststroke. Ellie Clarke was first in the individual medley, Lexie Ward won the 500 free and the Greyhounds swept all three relays.

Carmel won five events in the boys meet. Trent Allen was a double winner in the 200 and 500 freestyles with Aaron Shackell finishing first in the butterfly. The Greyhounds also won the medley and 200 free relays.
