Greyhounds score sweep of Giants

Carmel’s basketball teams each scored victories over Ben Davis on Friday in Metropolitan Conference games.
The Greyhounds girls hosted the Giants and pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 57-44 victory at the Eric Clark Activity Center. It was back and forth in the first half, as Class 4A No. 9 Carmel led 13-5 after the first period. Fatima Valiente scored five points.
Ben Davis came back in the second quarter to take a 20-19 lead into halftime. The game was tied at 33-33 after three periods, but it was all Greyhounds in the fourth, with Carmel scoring 25 points. Five different Greyhounds scored, with Kate Clarke getting eight points.
Clarke led in scoring with 17 points. Bridget Dunn earned another double-double with 16 rebounds and 12 points, and also blocked three shots. Clarke had eight rebounds, with Kiara Gill and Riley Pennington both collecting five rebounds.
The Greyhounds boys, also ranked No. 9 in 4A played at Ben Davis and held on for a 44-39 victory. Carmel got off to a good start by leading 11-4 after the first quarter, then led 22-14 at halftime. The Giants cut into the Greyhouds’ lead in the third, getting within 31-27 by the end of the period. Ben Davis then got as close as 40-37 with 27 seconds left, but Carmel was able to hold on.
Brian Waddell scored 11 points for the ‘Hounds, with Peter Suder adding 10 points and seven rebounds. Jackson Jannsen scored eight, including two 3-pointers. Bryce Beery pulled seven rebounds, Conner Gioia handed out seven assists and Suder made two blocks.
The Greyhounds girls finished MIC play 5-2, good for second place behind Lawrence Central, the conference champion at 6-1. Carmel completed the regular season 15-7 and plays Hamilton Southeastern at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the first round of Sectional 8 at Westfield.
The Greyhounds boys are 4-1 in the conference and 10-4 overall. They return home tonight to host New Castle.
