A clutch fourth-quarter kick by Josh Placzek sent Carmel past one of its biggest rivals on Friday.
The Greyhounds beat Warren Central 17-14 at Carmel Stadium. The Warriors scored first on the ‘Hounds with an interception return midway through the first period, and held that opening lead well into the second quarter.
Carmel got on the board with 7:59 left in the second when Anthony Coellner zoomed to the end zone on a 59-yard run. Placzek’s extra-point kick tied the game, and it would stay tied at 7-7 at halftime.
James Clark’s nine-yard run in the third quarter put Warren up 14-7. The Greyhounds tied the game again late in the fourth period when Christian Peterson caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Coellner. Placzek again tied the game with an extra-point kick. Carmel got the ball back, took it to the 20-yard line, and Placzek made a 37-yard field goal with 1:19 left to seal the game.
Coellner led the Greyhounds’ rushing with 96 yards.
Carmel is 5-3 and plays next Friday at Lawrence Central.
