The Carmel boys basketball team used a big third quarter to win its season opener Wednesday, beating Zionsville 54-43 at the Eric Clark Activity Center.
The first half was close: the Eagles led 11-10 after the first quarter, with the Greyhounds coming back to tie the game 24-24 at halftime. Carmel used a 7-0 run to take control in the third period, with Julian Vogt hitting a 3-pointer. Later in the period, Alex Couto and Zach Michaels hit triples and that helped the ‘Hounds to a 41-28 lead after three quarters. Carmel maintained that lead in the fourth quarter.
Couto led the way with 20 points, totaling three 3-pointers and four assists. Harrell finished with 11 points and pulled eight rebounds.
The Greyhounds are off until Friday, Dec. 6 when they host Lawrence Central.
