The Carmel boys basketball team started Metropolitan Conference play with a convincing win at Lawrence Central on Friday night.
The Class 4A No. 4 Greyhounds beat the Bears 72-43. Carmel outscored Lawrence Central in each of the four quarters, starting with a 21-10 lead after the first quarter. The ‘Hounds led 35-19 at halftime, then poured in another 22 points in the third quarter.
“Happy with how they played together,” said Carmel coach Ryan Osborn. “Played hard. Moved the ball well.” The coach said his team “played with good energy” and called the win “a step in the right direction.”
Senior Charlie Williams led the Greyhounds with 23 points, shooting 10-of-12 from the field.
“I thought the guards did a good job of screening for him,” said Osborn. “He was a good screener tonight, got in good position. We shared the ball well.”
Williams was one of three players to reach double figures. Pete Suder scored 18 points, also collecting nine rebounds and dishing out seven assists. Sam Orme made four 3-pointers on his way to 18 points and also had three blocked shots. Carmel also had a few young players that got some good minutes as well.
“Just like all teams, your hope is every week they pull together a little closer and get a little more comfortable with roles and become better each week,” said Osborn.
Carmel is 2-1 for the season. The Greyhounds will travel to Brownsburg this afternoon to participate in the Sneakers for Santa tournament, and will play 4A No. 5 Homestead, with the game tipping off at 4:45 p.m.
