Greyhounds boys drop opener at Zionsville

The Carmel boys basketball team found itself on the wrong side of a comeback on Tuesday, as the No. 1-ranked and two-time defending Class 4A state champion Greyhounds opened their season at No. 10 Zionsville.
Carmel enjoyed a nine-point halftime lead before the Eagles came roaring back in the third quarter. Zionsville then took the lead in the fourth period and went on to beat the Greyhounds 45-42.
Carmel got off to a good start, leading 15-8 after the first quarter. Senior Pete Suder was playing well early, scoring seven points. Suder then added another seven points in the second period, including a 3-pointer. Senior Josh Whack hit a 3 as well, and that helped the ‘Hounds along to a 30-21 halftime lead.
But the Eagles’ defense took over in the third quarter, allowing Carmel only three points. Whack scored a basket and junior Spencer White made a free throw. By the time the period was over, Zionsville had cut the Greyhounds’ lead to 33-31. The Eagles took the lead with under three minutes to go and stayed in front from there.
Suder scored 23 points, including three 3-pointers, and led the rebounds with nine. Junior Garwey Dual, a transfer from the Houston area, came off the bench and made two blocked shots.
Carmel will go back on the road Saturday, traveling to Mason, Ohio to take on Cincinnati Elder. The game starts at 4 p.m. and will be livestreamed on chatterboxsports.com
