Greyhounds blast LC in opener

The Carmel girls basketball team got off to a roaring start in its first game of the season, overwhelming Lawrence Central 103-30 in a Metropolitan Conference road game Thursday.
The Class 4A No. 2 Greyhounds led 29-7 after the first quarter and 59-13 at halftime. Carmel then allowed the Bears no points in the third period. The 103 points is a new school record for the ‘Hounds.
Six Greyhounds finished in double figures on the scoreboard. Tomi Taiwo and Maddi Sears each had 15 points, with Sears draining three 3-pointers and Taiwo making two. Macy Berglund added 14 points, Amy Dilk and Mackenzie Wood both scored 11 and Blake Smith poured in 10 points.
Vanessa Mullins led Carmel’s rebounding with nine boards, with Wood pulling eight rebounds and Berglund grabbing seven. Dilk dished out six assists and Molly Gillig handed out five.
The Greyhounds go back on the round Saturday for an afternoon game at Homestead. The Spartans are the defending 4A state champions and are ranked No. 5 in the state.
