Jennifer McCormick, Indiana’s Democratic candidate for governor, on Thursday named Terry Goodin as her pick for lieutenant governor.

Goodin

McCormick

The 57-year-old from Austin is a former Indiana representative, serving from 2000 to 2020. The Scott County city of Austin is about a 35-minute drive north of Louisville, Ky.

In February 2022, President Joe Biden named Goodin as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Indiana state director for rural development. Goodin also served as superintendent of Crothersville Community Schools for 24 years. He lives with his wife on the family beef-cattle farm near Austin.

Indiana’s lieutenant governor runs four state agencies, ceremoniously presides over the Senate and would break tie votes there, if that would ever happen in a chamber where the GOP enjoys a supermajority.

McCormick’s pick will be confirmed at the July 13 Indiana Democratic Party Convention.

McCormick will face the Republican candidate for governor, U.S. Sen. Mike Braun, and his running mate, Micah Beckwith; and the Libertarian nominee for governor, Donald Rainwater.

Democrats haven’t won a statewide office in Indiana since 2012.

As the Democratic Nominee for State House Representative Dist. 29 in Noblesville, and as a convention delegate, I support Dr. Jennifer McCormick’s preference endorsement of Dr. Terry Goodin as running mate. It is ultimately up to the delegates to decide; however, I feel it shows a strong effort from Dr. Jennifer McCormick for bipartisan and common-sense leadership to represent all of Indiana as a team. I was able to have a short conversation with Jennifer, and also listen to her address some of the prior stances on social issues held by Dr. Goodin. The platform of personal freedoms does not change and Dr. Goodin has learned and evolved with more understanding today. It hit home with me when Jennifer McCormick stated that Dr. Goodin has grown in acceptance and as Democrats, our values are to forgive mistakes with changed behavior and bring people in.
