The REPORTER

Cole Starnes is not alone, but he is on top of the leaderboard.

The Hamilton Southeastern graduate who just finished his freshman year at Indiana University is tied for the lead in the 124th Indiana Amateur Championship, which is taking place at Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru. Starnes shares the 36-hole lead with Indianapolis’ Matt Vogt; both are five under par for the tournament with two-day scores of 139.

The 54-hole tournament finishes up today. Starnes went under par in both of his first two rounds, carding a three-under 69 on Monday with five birdies, then scored a two under 70 on Tuesday, draining four birdies.

Starnes is one of three Hamilton County golfers presently in the top 10. Carmel’s Ty Gingerich, a Guerin Catholic and University of Cincinnati graduate, is tied for third with a four under 140. Gingerich made par in his first round with a 72, including four birdies, then moved into third overall by going four under on Tuesday, finishing with a 68. Gingerich put in five birdies in the second round.

Westfield’s Jake Cesare, a senior-to-be for the state runner-up Shamrocks, is tied for eighth place with 143. Cesare scored a two under 70 in the first round, making five birdies, and scored 73 on Tuesday, draining two birdies.
