Guerin Catholic ended University’s 12 game winning streak with a 63-54 win over the Trailblazers Tuesday night at The Eagles Nest.
An 11-0 run late in the third quarter was pivotal for the Golden Eagles, turning a 42-37 University lead in to a 48-42 Guerin Catholic advantage in less than three minutes. Dylan Murans scored six points in the decisive run that started with a Robert Sorenson three pointer. Kamea Chandler put Guerin on top to stay at 44-42 on a pair of foul shots with 1:31 left in the quarter, the last of 12 lead changes in the game.
Andre Ozlowski stemmed the tide for University with a late three pointer that cut the Guerin lead to 48-45 at the end of the period. University cut the lead to four on three occasions, the last at 57-53 with 60 seconds remaining on a Seth Hogg steal and two free throws, but Sorenson went six for six at the free throw line in the last minute to ice the game.
Sorenson finished with a game high 20 points, including a perfect 10 for 10 at the charity stripe. The Golden Eagles were lethal at the foul line, making 17 of 20 shots. Murans had 19 points and Chandler 15 for Guerin Catholic. Jack Cherry played an outstanding all-around game, handing out eight assists and pulling down a game-high seven rebounds.
Sabien Cain led University with 18 points and Ozlowski had 13. Both Cain and Ozlowski had team-high six rebounds.
Guerin Catholic end the regular season with a 15-8 record and will prepare for Sectional 27 action. The Golden Eagles will play the winner of the Heritage Christian versus Brebeuf Jesuit game on Friday, March 3 at 6 p.m. Sectional 27 will be played at Indianapolis Shortridge.
University falls to 19-2 on the season and will end their regular season Thursday night when they host Indianapolis Thrival Academy at The U Center for Senior Night.
