Golden Eagles sneak in big win in final moments

The REPORTER

Guerin Catholic got a last-second victory at Lebanon last Saturday.

A quarterback sneak from Malcolm Houze pushed the Golden Eagles ahead 35-31 with 3.5 seconds to go, and that would be the final score of a back-and-forth game that was delayed by a day due to thunderstorms.

Guerin Catholic got on the board quickly, as Houze threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Macey one minute into the game. Lebanon put up two TD throws during the last part of the first quarter and led 14-7 after one.

Both teams scored another touchdown in the second quarter. Guerin scored first on a 33-yard throw from Houze to Aiden Horn, but the Tigers answered right away when Tannon Monden took the kickoff return 84 yards to score. Lebanon led 21-14 at the break.

The Golden Eagles tied the game late in the third quarter when Jack Linden punched the ball in for a touchdown. Lebanon kicked a field goal in the fourth quarter to lead 24-21; minutes later, Houze found Horn again for a 28-yard touchdown pass. Guerin Catholic was finally in front 28-24.

The Tigers jumped ahead 31-28 on a 45-yard pass with 2:11 left in the game, but that was enough time for the Golden Eagles to get back and score. It was a nice ending for Houze, who went 19-of-34 through the air for 259 yards, and led the rushing with 64 yards.

Hayden Cler led the receptions with nine. Nick Wilson was 5-for-5 kicking extra points.

Guerin Catholic is 2-0 and hosts Heritage Christian on Friday.
