On Friday night, Guerin Catholic hosted Brebeuf Jesuit in a girls-boys varsity doubleheader. With the girls up first, head coach Danielle Cardinal’s squad was looking to get back on the winning track before sectional starts the first week of February. That’s exactly what the Golden Eagles did in a 51-38 Circle City win over the Braves.
Both teams got off to a slow start with Brebeuf out to a 7-5 lead after the first quarter.
Guerin got it going offensively in the second, scoring 18 to the Braves’ 12, going to halftime with a 23-19 slight edge.
Slowly, but surely the Golden Eagles started to pull away. Doubling up Brebeuf 10-5 in the third, they took a 33-24 lead into the fourth.
Another 18-point quarter kept the final outcome as a double-digit win for Guerin by 13.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak and more importantly it got them their first win in the Circle City Conference to finish 1-2 in league play.
Ava Bills led with a game-high 19 points on six field goals and was 6-for-7 at the free throw line. Annie Murphy had 10, while Caroline Ford (9) and Dana Dues (6) also pitched in.
Guerin Catholic (10-9, 1-2 CCC) gets a break before finishing up the regular season on the road at Lafayette Central Catholic (16-4) next Friday.
