Guerin Catholic got a nice comeback victory on the road Friday night, as the IFCA Class 3A No. 2 Golden Eagles shut out 4A Northview in the second half to win 29-24.
The Knights scored on a long rushing touchdown from Tyler Lee for the first points of the game. Guerin Catholic’s Peter Rooney responded with a 13-yard run to the end zone, and Peyton Butts’ kick tied the game. But Lee took off for a 54-yard TD run, and Northview led 14-7 after one quarter.
The teams traded field goals to begin the second quarter, with Butts kicking one in for GC. Lee added a short touchdown rush late in the period, but Butts added another field goal right before halftime to keep the Golden Eagles within 24-13.
Guerin Catholic took over in the third quarter, scoring 16 unanswered points. Malcolm Houze and Ryan Zimmerman teamed up for two long passing touchdowns, the first one for 31 yards. Guerin Catholic then recovered a fumble on the kickoff, began another drive, and scored again: Zimmerman sent a 19-yard touchdown throw to Houze. Butts kicked a 40-yard field goal with 8.2 seconds left in the quarter, and the score was 29-24 and would stay there until the game finished.
Zimmerman had an outstanding night, going 20-for-30 with 219 yards. House had seven receptions totaling 104 yards, and Rooney gained 106 yards on the ground.
The Golden Eagles are 5-2 and host Terre Haute North next Friday.
