Golden Eagles lead early, fall to Knights

Guerin Catholic put a scare into Class 2A No. 1 Lafayette Central Catholic Friday at the Knights’ field before LCC came back to win over the Golden Eagles 22-21.

Guerin Catholic led 14-0 after the first quarter, with Malcolm Houze scoring on a 19-yard run and Dylan Vargas adding a four-yard rushing touchdown. The Golden Eagles ran that lead to 21-0 by halftime, after Trevor Macey caught a 54-yard TD pass from Houze and Nick Wilson made his third extra point kick of the game.

But Central Catholic began its comeback midway through the third quarter with a two-yard touchdown run from Jackson Cain, bringing the Knights within 21-7 going into the fourth. A five-yard touchdown pass got LCC within 21-14. The Knights scored again with a six-yard run from Mason Meister, then LCC made a two-point conversion pass for the winning points.

Houze finished the game 14-of-19 and totaled 155 yards. Macey and Hayden Cler both had four receptions. Jack Linden led the rushing with 103 yards.

Guerin Catholic is 4-5 and hosts West Vigo next Friday in the first round of Class 3A Sectional 29.
